MATAKING REEF DAY

.

The Reef Dive Resort is staging the Mataking Reef Day as part of the world
wide PADI ‘Project Aware Program”. A group of 34 secondary school
students & teachers, 30 pax of in-house resorters & divers, 15 army & PGA
members and staff of the resort participated in the event.

Speech & Workshops on the environment concerning the undersea and
marine ecosystem was presented by invited guest speaker Mr. Paul Liang,
PADI Instructor from Pro-Diver (Tawau). The rationale behind this project is
to educate the public in awareness of environmental issues, such as

.

Pollution, causes and effects of Global Warming and the urgent need of preservations of our marine environment. To stop fish
bombing and fishing for Shark Fins.

.

The program includes a session on the damage caused by rubbish being dumped on
land and in the sea. Plastic bags kill turtles because they look like jelly fish and turtles
choke on the bags when they try and eat them. Thousands of plastic bottles wash up
on offshore islands and discarded fishing nets kill a huge amount of fishes.

The kids and non-divers divided into groups to collect rubbish such as plastic bags,
plastic bottles, discarded fishing nets and general waste products which all threaten
our marine environment. Approximately over 50 bags / 300 kgs collected. The divers
assisted with underwater activities such as rubbish collection, collecting tyres and
relocating them at the Artificial Reef and cleaning the corals reef table.
