It's like a local version of Maldives.. Super stunning, white sand and crystal clear sea.. My parents instantly fall in love with the island. We enjoyed our stay so much!! Food is so good, everyone from resort are so friendly!! we had a super duper great time there :))))))

Beautiful island, excellent snorkeling and diving, beautiful countryside and especially very friendly and proffessional staff. Very good educational and ecological program. Turtle saving activities. We will come back for sure.

We stayed here for 5 nights in a single beach chalet with full dive package. Being eager divers we went three times to Sipadan. The hotel offers excellent service, rooms are great and the location is something for itself. Don’t expect a Ritz Carlton style luxury hotel. A five star hotel in a central area would have more pro service and facilities to the fingertips. All though this is a fantastic place. The sand is the finest, the entire island is sorrouned by fantastic spots for diving and snorkeling. The five star padi centre has great and knowledgeable English-speaking dive masters, modern and safe boats, and good equipment. We have experienced bad dive centers in this area before. For Europeans, it might seem overwhelming that almost all guests are Chinese. However, we experienced that the staff placed non-chinese people in separate areas of the restaurant in the evening. Meals are great, and they can help you order shell fish and crab for dinner in addition to the buffet. Mataking with beach chalet and full dive package is expensive – but go for it. It is a memory for life.

A beautiful place where to have a peaceful holiday: incredible sea, turtles, intact coral reef, comfortable room with a very high level service. Island is attached to the uninhabitated Little Mataking. Absolutely to recommend along with the incredible tour to Sipadan Marine Park

Diving at Sipadan is wonderful but getting there can be cumbersome. One of very few choices for a decent stay around Sipadan is Mataking Island. Remote but with enormous strengths. It is a small island, privately owned with a decent beach, though not great. Rooms are large and with basic amenities including good air conditioning. Very good food ( if you are ok with Asian food). Its greatest plus is its excellent staff. They are always eager to please the guests.Diving, as is well known, is excellent at Sipadan as well as in Islands surrounding Mataking. Though, funnily, most of the guests at Mataking may not be divers. As a result, though Reef Dive Resort has a quota of 6 Daily permits for Sipadan, on several days they may not have any divers at all. So, unless one is willing to pay for the whole boat, one may find it very uncertain. The Dive center is very well run by Telly who is also an excellent dive guide. As a dive master and guide Tom is excellent. He knows the dive sites so well and can make all the difference in one’s diving experience. He quickly figures out each diver’s interest and will make sure to give you a good time.Sadly, there is very little on the island for non divers as snorkeling on the house reef is mediocre.  

I stayed at Mataking for about a week and had a fantastic time there. Living in Shanghai can drive you a bit nuts sometimes and being in the exact opposite environment was quite literally a breath of fresh air: fresh air, nature, good service, and people who care. As a Shanghai dweller and part-time dive instructor, I’m not just picky about service but also very keen on seeing a smooth and responsible dive operation. Mataking did a great job in any of these areas. From the moment of arrival till the moment of departure there was not a moment I needed to worry about much. Whenever needed, staff was there, whenever quiet was desired they were invisible. My dive gear was taken care of fast and professionally, dive staff was always on call and did a great job at making me feel comfortable and at home. They were just the right amount of accommodating, eager to show things, but not willing to disturb the marine environment too much just for a photo op.  Having a resident marine biologist made it possible to go a bit in-depth on some subjects and made the diving even more enjoyable. She seemed to know a lot about the local turtle population and it was great however to experience the hatching and release of baby turtles. Except for the turtle hatcheries, Mataking also tries actively to combat dynamite fishing, rebuild the reefs, and educate the local population on the importance on environmental conservation. All very important and noble initiatives, not undertaken by any average dive resort. All in all a very pleasant and refreshing stay thanks to the local staff and marine biologist.
